In the fall of 2016, Ruperto Medina, the Manager of ANACCAFE, got in touch with Gervais through a mutual contact with our friends at Finca El Porvenir in Nicaragua, and our newest Coffee Relationship was born! ANACCAFE is a co-op of farmers located in the Cococho region of northeast Peru. The co-op, as it is today, was established in 2010 and became an official group in 2013, under the leadership of Olegario Medina Tarrillo.
The farmers have been practicing organic farming for years, and the co-op is now certified Fair Trade and Organic. The coffee is grown at altitudes between 1250 and 1500 meters above sea level, and each farmer grows, picks and wet processes their own coffee manually, using the best techniques for their farms individual altitude.
Once each farmer finishes the wet process and sun-dries their coffee, they deliver it to the co-op. There, the farmers’ coffees are combined, and the coffee is sent to be dry processed before it is shipped out. In the dry process facility, they further analyze the coffee for physical and cup quality, stating that by the end of the process, they only want to export “Coffee Gold.”
Little River Roasting is the first roaster in the US that the members of ANACCAFE have been able to contact and export their coffee to, since their founding. In February of 2017, Gervais and other members of the LRR family were able to go visit Cococho and meet the members of ANACCAFE. We were blown away by their enthusiasm, commitment to coffee and hospitality: from the town wide welcome reception well after dark, to the tours of individual farms, to the grand introduction to Peruvian culture and coffee. We are all thrilled to have established this relationship, and are especially inspired by the perseverance, kindness, quality coffee that the farmers at ANACCAFE show.
